Welcome to the party, Charlie! My son was born May 15th, and my life hasn’t been quite the same ever since. I will try to get back to a regular blogging schedule soon…
Today we look at ways to keep your online accounts extra safe. While there is no way you can keep felonious nerds from getting at your private info with 100% certainty, there are ways to stack the odds in your favor. Let’s start with one of the Achilles’ heels of online security: the secret password.
A friend of mine was telling me over breakfast one fine Saturday about a great article on creating “secure forever” passwords. The name of the article is “The Usability of Passwords”, written by Thomas Baekdal, and it is a must read for everyone. Not just your IT guy or your web developer, but anyone who uses the internet (this means you, dear reader).

As you can guess by the vagueness of this posts headline, I have little idea what I’m going to write about today. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been cooking up some relevant blog pieces in my head, but they are having trouble getting realized. So instead, I’m going to look back at what historians may refer to as the first Work Week of May, 2011. Odds are the historians will be focused more on Osama bin Laden’s death than anything I have to say, but such is life.
So what has happened this week? So far, my baby is still just a bun in the oven. A bun that is making the oven very uncomfortable. But any day now he will make his move, this much is certain. Until then, poor Molly is going to have to deal with the fact that her innards are being compressed in a way I don’t like to think about.

Working from home I find is filled with interesting challenges. First and foremost of these challenges: starting work. It’s not that I’m unmotivated or that I don’t enjoy what I do, its simply a matter of transitioning from that first cup of coffee and checking out what is new at blabbermouth.net to that first line of code. Sometimes to ease that transition I will opt to visit a developer-friendly site like .net and get inspiration or learn a new technique. That is what I did today (after visiting the “CNN of Metal News” that is Blabbermouth, I must admit).

Wow. It looks like I forgot to blog last week. For what it’s worth, things have been a little crazy here at Postrad HQ. You see, my son is due anytime now. My wonderful girlfriend Molly is now 37 weeks along, and according to the midwife as of yesterday the little scamp is about 8 1/2 pounds and very tall. We are both very excited and are getting ready for his debut into the world.
His due date is May 14th, which also happens to be the day of the Almanzo 100. This is significant because Molly and I first started hanging out while training for the race. For those of you who don’t know, the Almanzo 100 is a bicycle race that spans 100 miles of gravel roads in the beautiful Spring Valley, Minnesota. It’s a bit of a grind, but one totally worth it. If the boy is born on his due date, we’ve decided that his middle name is going to be Almanzo. The event’s organizer, Chris Skogen, has kept the event free and helped to inspire other gravel-themed races in the midwest.
